Establish your boarding style

A good starting point is to define how you are going to use the boots. Will you be riding in powder or spending lots of time in the parks? If you are an all mountain boarder and want speed you will need a boot which is stiff and therefore more responsive. If you plan to spend most of your time in the park and are slightly more leisurely in your approach go for a softer style.

What level boarder are you?

If you are a beginner or your riding is about having fun then we wouldn't advise you to pay a fortune for the best boots with the most advanced features. In fact any good quality boot would work for you, just make sure you buy an established brand. If however you want to advance your style and technique do look for a boot that gives you added technological benefits.

Gender specific

Womens boots are designed to suit womens feet ie they tend to have narrower heels. Interestingly most womens boots tend to be on the soft to medium side of the spectrum.

Getting the flex right

Once you have established how you want to ride and what your level is you should know whether you are looking for a soft or stiffer flex. The only problem is that boot flexibility definitions do vary according to the brand.Burton helpfully produce a 1-10 rating scale to express their boot flex but other brands will use the word 'firm' when elsewhere they would be classified as 'soft'. You will therefore need to accept that getting your boot right for you will involve some trial and error.

Understanding the different lacing systems

Most boots will be traditional laces, quick pull or boa. The traditional laces are good in that they are inexpensive and you will be familiar with the mechanism, the main disadvantage is that tieing laces on the slopes with cold hands is not to everyones taste. Quick -pull laces have the advantage of being able to be used whilst you are wearing gloves. The main disadvantage is that they are initially a little complex and some boarders say that they cannot exert enough pull to get the tightness they require. The boa system is great in that it usually requires just one hand and you can adjust them in gloves. The main disadvantage is that the 1 dial system applies uniform snugness so you cannot really customise it.

Understanding boot liners

Liners come in different types. Non moldable ones are certainly less pliable than moldable liners which as the title suggest are designed to conform to your foots shape. There are also heat moldable liners which you will pay more for but you will end up with liners that are a true custom fit.

What is a good fit?

The sizing of snowboard boots is very similar to that of normal footwear but do be aware that one brands size 9 is not the same as another brand. Your boots should feel snug, the key is that your ankles and heels ought to remain securely in place with minimal heel lift. Do wear snowboard boots when you are trying on your boots.
