Got your own skis? With budget airlines keen to throw your kit in the underbelly, why not browse a range of ski bags that are well padded and will protect your edges properly. Ranging from premium brands like K2 or Salomon through to cheaper ski bags, you can buy online and get some great savings on the high street.
Whilst all ski bags look very similar you will quickly find that they can differ enormously. Some ski bags will, for example, come with little or no padding; with padding only around the binding area; others offering full padding including along your edges!

How often will it be used?
You may only ski once a year to France, if so your ski bag will have a different usage to someone who plans to ski every weekend where the ski bag is attached to the roof of the car. This usage will dictate how robust the bag needs to be, what sort of padding and straps are needed and whether wheels are useful.
Quality of the fabric
The weight of the fabric is expressed in Denier, ideally you should look for a high Denier count along with a tight weave. This way the bag will be tougher and will withstand rips and tears more easily, an important factor if it has to withstand baggage handling! Nylon is also stronger than polyester and also check out that it has a PVC laminate backing-the seams will be stronger and it will be waterproof.
Zippers
You will find that most bags use two different types of zips-tooth and coils. Coils will be the better choice and the bigger size of coil zipper the better. Also check the stitching that attaches the zip to the bag. A good bag will have two rows of stitching.
Padding
This goes back to how you are using your ski bag. If your bag is going on the roof of your car then padding may be less important, in fact some padded bags wont fit onto rooftop ski racks. Padding will however undoubtedly protect your skis and bindings more when you are dependent on baggage handling.
Straps , Handles and Wheels
Check that the handle wrap is held closed with Velcro as it is very reliable.Neoprene is also good to look out for as it provides extra padding for your hands. Wheels can be great for sheer ease of carriage but check that they are part of an internal or external metal and plastic frame. Also, with some bags wheels can add considerably to the weight of the bag which in tun can make the bag more expensive to fly with, so think carefully before opting for a bag with wheels.
