WE LIKE

  • Sits at the heart of the Three Valleys, the largest ski area in the world. Easy access to Courcheval, Les Menuires and Val Thorens.
  • Great for intermediates. Excellent terrain parks and great ski schools.
  • Good nightlife here and a good choice of accommodation, a new 5* hotel has now also opened.

WE DON'T LIKE

  • Village is spread out and some accommodation a little way from the slopes
  • Pistes and trails can get very crowded at peak times, try to avoid February.
  • The pistes on the eastern side get very over exposed to the sun causing slushy conditions.

Meribel is famous for its chalet accommodation, it is full of  traditional alpine wooden and stone buildings. No modern high rises in abundance here! So for many this resort represents the best that chalets can offer, beautiful chalets nestled in amongst stunning scenery complete with log burning stoves and ski to door convenience.

if you choose a chalet in Meribel you will simply be overwhelmed with choice! There are at least 150 catered chalets to choose from, provided by both large tour operators and owners direct. So choice is no problem. They range from top end luxury with everything you could possibly desire to uncatered budget chalets. Your issue could be knowing where to start.

Where to Look for a Ski Chalet in Meribel

If you are looking for luxury then look no further than Les Chalets area of Meribel. In addition to this check out le Domaine de Burgin and le Belvedere and finally Les Brames. The later is situated between Meribel and Mottaret. Chalets in these areas will offer you private chefs, saunas and jacuzzis and even private staff on hand.

For those of you wanting a good chalet but not willing to pay the price at the top end you will find Meribel simply awash with chalets like this. For those of you on tight budgets check out the villages below Meribel, hamlets like Chandon, Nantgerel and le Cret. You will need to get a short bus into Meribel but you will get  a lot more for your money.

Apartments on a ski holiday can be a great idea. They often work out a little less expensive than a chalet but many come with amazing luxury features including chefs and facilities that would rival any hotel. So when you are looking for accommodation don't discount apartments straight away, you may be surprised to see what's on offer.

Meribel is fairly unique when compared to other purpose built French resorts as it has none of the ugly concrete apartment blocks that you see elsewhere. Apartment buildings here are all made from stone or wood so they look great. When looking for an apartment here look out for the sign 'Label Meribel' which is awarded to accommodation that meets a high standard. Mottaret is a good place to start looking for an apartment as it has a good number of self catering apartments and many are ski in ski out. For those wanting peace and quiet check out the Altiport a quiet wooded area situated at the top of Meribel.

What are the Benefits of an Apartment

You will find in Meribel good quality accommodation available whether you are looking for a chalet or an apartment. Apartments here really do mean that you don't need to compromise on quality and they may work out more reasonably priced than some chalets.

Apartments can be a great choice if you are travelling in a large group or with other families. Booking apartments in the same apartment complex or block does mean that you are still together but you have more space and freedom than if you were sharing one chalet.

A hotel can  be a great choice on a ski holiday. You get completely looked after and have no worries about food. Many hotels will also provide transfers to and from your chosen airport which is a massive bonus. And if you are travelling with children you often have games rooms to keep them entertained and even babysitting services.

Meribel is well known for offering good quality accommodation whether it be hotels, chalets or apartments. Hotel wise you have over 30 hotels and lots of apartment hotels to choose from so it shouldn't be difficult to find what you are looking for. In Meribel you can certainly choose from 5*luxury to more basic, family run hotels, still offering great value and service.

What are Hotels Like in Meribel?

In 2012 Meribel opened its first 5* hotel le Kaila which has 42 rooms and suites to choose from. The facilities are what  you would expect from 5* accommodation including a spa in house. In addition to this there are some great 4* and 3* offerings which were built for the 1992 Olympic Games and so are in great locations. For a really stylish hotel check out Le Savoy hotel right in the centre of Meribel.

At the other end of the market check out the Doron Hotel and Hotel le Roc. Both are cheap but offer good value for money. As they are in the centre of the apres ski we wouldn't recommend either hotel for families or those of you wanting to get away from it all. For families it is well worth checking out the Mark Warner Chalet Hotel Tarentaise as it has great services and facilities for children.

HOTELS

Transfers often cause people the most headaches on their ski holiday. You've just landed and are keen to get to your resort and hit the slopes, a poorly planned transfer can just delay you and add stress which you don't need at the start of your ski holiday. Organising all of this before you leave home will make everything run smoothly and also work out cheaper.

The best airport for Meribel and the rest of the Three Valleys is Chambery, about 1 1/4 hours away but this airport often doesn't have the best choice of flights so do consider Grenoble and Lyon, both about 2 hours away and also Geneva, 3 hours away. Geneva may be the longest but here you will get a great choice of airlines and flights.

Private Minibus to Meribel

Booking a minibus direct from the airport to Meribel is a great option. If 8 of you share the minibus the price can work out very reasonable. Booking in advance with a private minibus company will work out cheaper. Prices from Geneva airport to Meribel are approximately 50 Euros for a one way shared transfer, Chambery is slightly cheaper at about 40 Euros.

Private Taxi to Meribel

You can of course always pick up a private taxi from outside any of the airports although this can work out a little more expensive but can be convenient for that last minute booking. Always negotiate the price before you get into the cab. And remember the driver does have to keep the meter running but cannot charge more than the price shown.
